Biographic Sketch
Tryphon T. Georgiou is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of California, Irvine, where he has been since 2016. From 1989 to 2016 he was on the faculty of the University of Minnesota, where he held the Vincentine Hermes-Luh Chair in Electrical Engineering (2002–2016) and directed the Center for Control Science and Dynamical Systems (1990–2016); he is Professor Emeritus there. Earlier he was on the faculty of Iowa State University (1986–1989) and Florida Atlantic University (1983–1986). He received the Diploma in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in 1979 and the Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Florida in 1983.
His research spans stochastic control, the geometry of optimal transport and Schrödinger bridges, analytic interpolation and moment problems, robust control, stochastic thermodynamics, and mathematical physics.
He is a Fellow of the IEEE, IFAC, SIAM and AAAS, a Fellow of the Hellenic Institute for Advanced Studies, and a Foreign Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA). He is a four-time recipient of the George S. Axelby Outstanding Paper Award of the IEEE Control Systems Society (1992, 1999, 2003, 2017).
